The Calcasieu Parish School Board will consider an industrial tax exemption for Juniper Specialty Products -- a plant that already is located here and is proposing to create no new jobs.
If local bodies approve this exemption, it would cost taxpayers $15.4 M. A rejection would produce new revenue for schools or allow a rollback of the property tax rate.
A committee of taxing bodies has met in a secret, closed session with industry representatives, from which the public was barred, to develop a recommendation that the board APPROVE the exemption.
The exemption:
Would take $140 MILLION in Juniper's property off the tax rolls for another 10 years.
Would cost local taxpayers $15.4 million in lost revenue.
Would produce 0 new jobs.
