WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, CALL UPON THE ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH COUNCIL, SCHOOL BOARD & SHERIFF TO REJECT MARATHON OIL'S REQUEST FOR $43 MILLION IN TAX EXEMPTIONS.
- Our school system is facing a $7 MILLION BUDGET SHORTFALL and is considering furloughs and layoffs
- The St. John ferry HAS BEEN CLOSED due to a lack of funds
- St. John the Baptist Parish has a VERY LIMITED PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM
- Local sewer and water systems need to be upgraded to maintain consistent public health standards
Marathon Oil is the 3rd largest refinery in the U.S., worth about $3 billion. And since 1999, St John the Baptist Parish has lost $885 million because of tax giveaways to Marathon Oil.
Now Marathon Oil is trying to get $43 million MORE in tax exemptions using an altered public document. These exemptions would result in major cuts to local schools and services and would increase taxes by $256 per home.
Tell the St John Parish Council to stop the endless giveaways to Marathon Oil
